I See White People
Kotaku points out something telling about the Left Behind video game. Apparently everyone in the game is white: I asked Bauman if he was worried that people might perceive the lack of minorities in the game as something racist. He reiterated that that wasn't the issue at all, adding that if you look at the plot of the book, it would simply mean that the minorities of the game were the ones that had ascended to heaven.Interesting indeed that a city as diverse as New York, in which the game is set, would have no minorities. The Big Apple hasn't been this white since Mad About You. I guess the Muslims and Jews made it to heaven after all. (h/t: Slacktivist) |

did you never see 'friends'?
actually, it isn't in the least surprising that a right-wing and fear-mongering evangelical videogame based on a cheap series of books based on cheap and narrow defined theology and that is developed in Russia would prominently feature whites.
what troubles me is the simplistic and paternalistic answer: all the non-whites went to be with Jesus.
that's hilarious.
and the spin - all the minorities were 'saved' - funny.
sad and pathetic but funny.
No, see, it's an act of racial reconciliation. See how far the American Church™ has come?
maybe if they hired a Black and/or Latino-owned firm to create the game...
i'm glad i don't really have to argue with you on these points. sometimes mainstream evangelicalism pisses me off.
that's ridiculous.
i'm really surprised they weren't bright enough to make the world look more like...well, the world.
and what a thought, only the white ppl. are left behind...
this game sounds more and more ridiculuous all the time.

I'd like to be optimistic and say that it's the developers fault. The game is being developed in Ukraine. Ukraine's ethnicity is 95 percent Ukrainian and Russian, so I can't imagine there being too many non-white people there. So you'd expect them to include the people in the game they're around the most. But given Christianity's history of racism, you'd think the folks behind Left Behind would delay the game until they could get it right. The fact that they aren't willing to do that says quite a bit.
