Apathy is a Fruit of the Spirit

The year following the Columbine school shooting, the parents of murdered Christian teenagers Cassie Bernall and Rachel Scott cashed in on their daughters’ deaths in one of the more sickening displays of publishing prostitution seen in modern Christendom. Both families wrote books recounting the spiritual journeys and “martyrdoms” of their late loved ones (I use quotes because, in the case of Cassie Bernall, the whole “she said yes” business quite possibly never happened.)

I was thinking about that this week in the aftermath of Terri Schiavo’s death. Somehow these two instances seem strikingly similar. In the case of Bernall and Scott, her well meaning parents decided to peddle their daughters’ recently snuffed lives for cash, undoubtedly for the greater good of “reaching people for Jesus” or “comforting the afflicted” (though it’s possible they also used the writing of the books to work through grief; grief, if you didn’t know, is easily comforted by a cash advance). In the case of Schiavo, RepubliChristians decided that this politically advantageous life was one worth saving. In both cases, we have well-meaning people using tragedy for their own purposes.

I’m willing to let the Columbine parents off the hook. Losing a child makes one do funny things, I’m sure. I’m not so willing to give the RepubliChristians a free pass. That’s because even a cursory glance into the world reveals that there is a lot of tragedy that RepubliChristians don’t give a rip about. As Baptist minister Tony Campolo is often known to remark to Christian audiences, "I have three things I'd like to say today. First, while you were sleeping last night, 30,000 kids died of starvation or diseases related to malnutrition. Second, most of you don't give a shit. What's worse is that you're more upset with the fact that I said shit than the fact that 30,000 kids died last night."

If Terri Schiavo had not been politically advantageous, or had she not been white, you can bet your ass George Bush would have continued his vacation. Don’t believe me? Explain why, in the very midst of arguments about removing Schiavo’s feeding tube, a church in Charlotte, N.C., decided to cut ties with a food pantry because said pantry works with Roman Catholics (Would this group of Christians have let Catholic Schiavo starve?). Explain why the Michigan House of Representatives has agreed to let doctors refuse to treat gay patients. Explain why the US may have allowed malnutrition rates of Iraqi children to double since the invasion.

Where is our outrage over these things? Perhaps apathy, not love, is the fruit of the spirit.

A lot like the way the liberals like you whored out the tsunami. We aren't giving enough, we suck. They took in more money than they can spend. Damn those consumeristic whores. With their whiney sob story, people die every die, what is their bitch?

Whether you are a liberal or conservative it either takes a huge event or an event close to home to make an impact. We have important crap to do like listen to rap music and criticize Christians who actually go to Church and tithe.

I forgot to mention the gay guy in Montana or was it Wyoming? Killed because he was gay, big news for months. How about they were just robbing him and too high on drugs to know what they were doing?

Towana Brawley and Rev. Al, the extortion racket Al and Jesse have going. I could go on and on and on... the real masters of capitalizing on others pain are the liberal pimps. Jon Stewart, Michael Moore, Clinton, Jackson, Sharpton, Al Franken, Bill Maher, et al.

Big question, what are YOU doing to alleviate all the world's woes?
Bitchin about some poor parents making somce cash off of their diead kids, does not feed any starving kids or cure AIDS.

I was going to just comment on what a great post, but then saw this shit. Jon Stewart? are you nuts?

Not that liberals don't have our own whores, that part is true. Moore is a great example, as are Sharpton and Jackson (at times). But neo is ignoring a whole list of horrible whores, like Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Bill O'Reilly, Rush, etc.

But the real issue here that neo misses is that he is arguing against himself. if all these liberals who tout the tsunami are whores, then isn't every politician and republican who postured over Terry Shiavo even worse? "people die every day?"

I do like the "criticize Christians who actually go to Church and tithe" part because that speaks to modern faith. Go to church and tithe, and then you get to do whatever shit you want to do! You can go rape the environment, profit from poverty, etc. But you paid your bit. Did your time listening to yet another vapid "three points and a poem" sermon.

yes, all of us are complicit. All of us can do more.

"A lot like the way the liberals like you whored out the tsunami."

I wasn't aware the tsunami was some sort of liberal bandwagon. Perhaps it was. I dunno.

"Damn those consumeristic whores. With their whiney sob story, people die every die, what is their bitch?"

Exactly. People die every day. The tsunami victims are no more (or less) important than the 30,000 children who die every day due to lack of food, or the diseases related to lack of food. They are no more (or less) important than the one million children who died between the Gulf War and whatever we've dubbed the latest Iraqi oil invasion.

"Whether you are a liberal or conservative it either takes a huge event or an event close to home to make an impact."

Agreed.

"We have important crap to do like listen to rap music and criticize Christians who actually go to Church and tithe."

I think that was a swipe at me, but it's hard to tell. If so, I *do* go to church and tithe (which is more than I can say for George W. Bush incidentally). And I don't even really understand the rap comment.

"I forgot to mention the gay guy in Montana or was it Wyoming? Killed because he was gay, big news for months. How about they were just robbing him and too high on drugs to know what they were doing?"

You mean Matthew Shephard? He was a student at University of Wyoming. I've heard that he may not have been killed for being gay. I don't know. But if you bothered to read much of my blog, you should know my disdain for media feeding frenzies knows no end, which includes just what you've mentioned. The news media is a rabid pack of dogs, searching for the sweet meat of ratings, and it doesn't have much to do with "liberal" or "conservative" issues. They follow the money.

"Towana Brawley and Rev. Al, the extortion racket Al and Jesse have going. I could go on and on and on... the real masters of capitalizing on others pain are the liberal pimps. Jon Stewart, Michael Moore, Clinton, Jackson, Sharpton, Al Franken, Bill Maher, et al."

Ditto Streak's and Jason's comments.

"Big question, what are YOU doing to alleviate all the world's woes?

Well, since you asked, my wife and I sponsor two children via Compassion International. I feed homeless people (and by that I mean "give them food," not "hand them money." My wife and I attempt to tithe (I have certain qualms about the practice, partly because the church we attend now is the only one I've ever been in that actually uses such money to help the poor and hurting (instead of buying itself new carpet), and partly because tithing assumes the church is an institution, when in fact it's a community, and partly because it's an Old Testament practice that Christians have misinterpreted anyway. Nonetheless, our church pools the money to the right places, so I'm in.). My wife and I occasionally volunteer with our church to help out in a elementary school in which the vast majority of students (90+ percent) are on free lunch. We also donate money where we think it's needed (to help refugees escape war torn countries, to provide basic vocational tools and skills to people in poor countries so that they can escape poverty and provide for their families on their own, food pantries, etc.).

And I say none of that to brag, because at the end of the day I'm a selfish little fuck concerned only with my own comfort and self-preservation. Nonetheless, I've been called out, so that's what "I'M doing to alleviate all the world's woes." What about you, Neo?

Awwww. It wasn't meant as an attack or anything. Just trying to encourage you. It sounds like you're involved with some cool stuff.
