This Is What A Terrorist Looks Like

According to a new poll, a pretty significant number of people in the U.S. support racial profiling at airports. Of the 1,080 surveyed, 60 percent said authorities should single out people who look "Middle Eastern" for security screenings at such locations as train stations and airports.

I can clearly understand that. It's not like a white person has ever committed an act of terrorism in the United States.

Here in Oklahoma a lot of people jumped to conclusions before they arrested McVeigh...one Oklahoma City Muslim woman even suffered a miscarriage from the trauma of the discrimination (an angry group of people had gathered outside her home).

How does the Boston Tea Party qualify as terrorist? No lives were lost, just property. Steps were taken to make sure that civilians were not harmed. That's no more "terrorist" than Jesus' direct action in the Temple or Greenpeace's drilling of wholes in whaling vessels.

Even guerilla war isn't terrorist if restricted to military targets.

I'm against all violence, but we muddy issues if anything that "disturbs the peace" is considered terrorist. The ruling authorities would love such a definition.

It is true that I would love to simply identify all middle eastern looking people as suspect for bombings. Then I remember the numerous friends I have who are middle eastern. They are just like me in my values, likes, dislikes, ambitions etc. I realize this is not the right way to go about securing our safety.
Then I try on Muslim, and that doesn't work either. There are more Muslims on earth than Christians, and they are not all blowing up the world. Again, I have Muslim friends, too, who follow a religion they know without become extreme about it. Knowing them as I do I know they are not secret operatives awaiting the push of a button to turn them into automatons of mass murder.

I go on and on, and there is no simple way to identify people or groups as possible terrorists.
This is what the authorities have to deal with as well. That is why we need experts who study terrorism, identify potential terrorists and track them. Hopefully, they have more successes than failures, but there will also be failures. It is not a finite science.

We have to be patient, follow what is being done, voice our concerns, weigh in with our appointed leaders and work to shape our world this way.

We need to be Americans in every sense of the word.

It's simply using the information at hand in order to thin out the hay bale to make the needle a little easier to find. Of course it is possible to be wrong, but I'd rather be wrong once in a while using all of the information available than to blind myself to obvious patterns.

The Columbine kids do not fit the definition of "Terrorist". These kids weren't out to achieve a political motive, they were just a bunch of screwed up kids looking to take out a few "friends" before commmitting suicide.

PLO/PKO (Palestinian)
IRA
SIMI (India)
Finally, how about the rebels in Chechnya or Abu Sayyaf of the Philippines? Oops, I almost forgot they're Muslim groups also...

Like it or not, the fact remains, the vast majority of terrorist groups, religous or otherwise, are Muslim in origin.

Although the boston tea party was a hilarious example (in my opinion), I don't count it as a terrorist act, even if in todays society it would be considered one. Yes Whites can be terrorists but the well known faces are people of Middle East descent. You can thank the media for that. Americans that feel uneasy on a plane when seated next to an Arab, aren't neccesarily racist or horrible people. We are told that generally those are the people responsible for terrorist acts and everyday we are bombarded with images of the war in Iraq with more and more violence from Iraqi's who are against America. So yes Americans support racial profiling in airports. I myself am not a racist but if I am going through security at an airport with an Arab and a 60 year old grandma behind me, you better believe I am praying the Arab is getting searched with extra scrutiny. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

What they should do is look for citizenship. If someone is a citizen, let them go, if not, do the full search.

Dont you think that if you were in a bank and someone shoved a gun in your face you would be terrified? In most cases I have to agree that racial profiling is wrong. The problem is the most effective bombers are those that are willing to die for their causes. The only ones who really have that dedication and beliefs seem to be those in the middle-eastern religions. Even those in groups like the KKK and other hate groups don't have the balls to get on a plane (or other mass transport) knowing full well they are going to die just to make a statement for their cause. How's your faith? You willing to do that just to make a statement?

Does it justify racial profiling... since mass transport seems to be one of their biggest targets right now I hate to say it.... but yes it does justify it. On the same breath though... I am in the US... the US does state no descrimination... and racial profiling is seriously descriminating.... so now what? I dont have an answer for that one :(

Probably just best to add some additional cost to transportation and actually spend it on screening everyone (someone needs to stand over top of the airlines, bus systems, etc... and seriously audit that cost too just to be sure it is not going into the profit statement).

While there are terrorists that are American or white, the organized terrorist groups with training camps, flight training, and cells of 3-5 members are not. We cannot possibly expect to prevent every terrorist act with the new security measures in place, but they are there to prevent another highly coordinated, planned, well-funded attack on American soil. Terrorism has achieved it's goal of making us fearful in our homeland. We should profile for security, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't, as citizens and Americans, still treat them with respect. The large scale terrorists we are screening for in airports & train stations are all middle eastern, but not all middle eastern men or women are terrorists.
Let's face reality - when faced with any crime, criminologists start by "profiling" the criminal. It works for the criminal they are looking for in mass transit terminals, by profiling middle eastern men. I hope that readers can appreciate that I am racist, and being a supporter of profiling doesn't indicate that. I'm not suggesting internment camps, just focused screenings. I've seen a group of marines be subject to screenings while arabs were largely ignored. That is when the system has gone wrong.
