Political Science

Things I Will Probably Never Understand:

1) Iraq invades Kuwait in 1990? United States invades Iraq. Israel illegally acquires Palestinian land in 1967 and never returns it? United States gives Israel $3 billion+ annually.

2) Syrian occupation of Lebanon? Bad. Israeli occupation of Syria? Not so much.

3) Former head of Pakistan’s ISI (the Pakistani equivalent of the CIA), Lt General Mahmoud Ahmad, orders $100,000 wired to 9/11 hijacker Mohammad Atta? United States invades Iraq.

4) Hamas behind suicide bombings against Israelis? Terrorism. Israel kills Palestinians and bulldozes their homes? Not terrorism.

5) Israeli possession of nuclear weapons? Acceptable. Iranian possession of nuclear weapons? Unacceptable.

6) How Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein could have had an “operational relationship” in the early 1990s, as former Undersecretary of Defense Douglas Feith claimed, given that bin Laden wanted to attack Hussein with mujahideen warriors at that time.

7) Despite having more than 700 military bases in 130 countries around the world, the United States should not be considered an empire.

8) Bill Clinton fails to take down Al-Qaeda following bombing of U.S. embassy in East Africa? Republicans go apeshit. Ronald Reagan fails to even retaliate after Hezbollah bombs U.S. embassy in Beirut? Republicans eerily silent.

Oh, come on Waspy; you KNOW Israel is the US's "golden child" (if you will). It can do no wrong! ;)

Seriously, though; it is all very perplexing...and disturbingly so.

Some more baffling things...

9) Iraq (supposedly) has nuclear weapons, Iran is (supposedly) working on developing them, and North Korea has admitted they've been working on them? Bad.

The US--the ONLY country to use WMD against another (dropping two atomic bombs on Japan toward the end of WWII)--and Israel have more nuclear weapons/WMD than anyone else? No inspections, no calls from other nations of the world for either country to disarm, none of that.

10) The green light to invade Iraq was, for all intents and purposes, given by the same political party that supported Sadaam Hussein back in the 1980s.

In response:
1) Iraq invaded Kuwait. Israel was attacked by neighboring nations. Israel acquired land in the process of defending herself. Iraq was an invader, Israel was defending herself. That's a rather big difference.

2) Umm, what occupation? And as if Israel has never offered the land back as part of piece offers...

4)Hamas convinces young men and women to kill themselves and to indiscriminately kill innocent civilians. Israel attempts to avoid killing or injuring innocent civilians in the process of targeting terrorists. It admittedly fail at times, but it do so in the process of trying to defend herself. I'm not sure how it could be argued that targeting innocent civilians in malls and on school buses can be considered protecting a nation...

5) The president of Iran has repeatedly made inflammatory remarks towards the United States and Israel and has clearly articulated his desires to attack both nations. Israel has no desire to use it's nuclear weapons (which I agree were acquired illegally) as a pretext to the end of the world. I'm not sure how Iran and Israel can be equated...

anonymous,

1) Um, right, except for the part where the United States told Iraq that it would look the other way when it invaded Kuwait, and then didn't. And the part where Israel tries to control water distribution in the Middle East.

2) Israel captured Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War (and again in the 1973 Yom Kippur War). United Nations resolutions, including 242, consider the area Israeli occupied from which Israel should withdraw, but Israel refuses to do so.

4) Sorry, but Israel kills innocent Palestinians just like Palestinians kill innocent Israelis. Israel isn't just defending itself.

5) Your assumption is somehow that Israel and the United States are the "good guys" and that Iran is the "bad guys." The United States and Israel have done plenty of things to demonstrate that they don't have the moral high ground. The US doesn't get to decide who gets nuclear weapons and who doesn't.
